Controller

The Controller at Downtown Partnership of Baltimore (DPOB) is responsible for preparing the organization’s financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) facilitating and completing monthly closing procedures, preparing account reconciliations monthly, for both Downtown Partnership and Downtown Management Authority (DMA). This position has two direct reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and lead the monthly and annual completion of financial statements, statements of financial position, statements of activity along with related statements
  • Coordinate and lead annual budget preparation and maintenance of budget systems
  • Coordinate and lead external audit and tax activities, including preparation of audit schedules and related footnotes
  • Assist and collaborate on preparing Grant applications, and Grant budgets
  • Keep the senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status
  • Recommend improvements to account systems, controls, and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Assist and collaborate on redeveloping the current CRM platform Salesforce, and ensuring it follows GAAP and best practices when related to financial information
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting
  • Lead the relationship between Baltimore City and DMA on tax surcharge data
  • Manages one Staff Accountant, and one Accounting Manager for Accounts Payable
  • Participates to the extent possible in DPOB events and activities to promote Baltimore and become familiar with all organizational events and programming
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting, or a bachelor’s degree in Finance with certificate or additional formal training to understand GAAP
  • Professional experience of 5-10 years of overall accounting experience
  • Non-profit experience preferred
  • An active CPA license can replace 50% of professional experience

Skills and Experience include:
  • Experience with Federal Grant requirements and single audits is a plus
  • Knowledge of various accounting programs and preferred experience in Great Plains
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to demonstrate initiative and follow-up skills
  • Must have strong analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced team environment
  • Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • This is a full-time exempt position on-site at DPOB
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be requested for work deadlines or DPOB events
  • Reports to the CFO
